Historical Events on March 11th

2011: A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 struck off the coast of Japan, triggering a devastating tsunami that caused widespread destruction and loss of life. The disaster also led to a nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

1959: Lorraine Hansberry’s groundbreaking play “A Raisin in the Sun” debuted on Broadway, becoming the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway.

1918: The first confirmed case of the Spanish flu, which would eventually become a global pandemic, was reported in Fort Riley, Kansas, United States.

2004: The Madrid train bombings occurred in Spain, killing 191 people and injuring over 2,000 others. It was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Europe.

1990: Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union, becoming the first Soviet republic to do so. This declaration eventually led to the restoration of Lithuania’s independence.
